What is Nostril Reduction?

When one thinks of altering the nose, changes to the nasal tip and bridge typically come to mind first. However, the appearance of the nostrils can have a major impact on facial aesthetics, shaping the way that others perceive the patient. Nostril reduction, or “alar base” reduction, can correct prominent or flared nostrils so that they blend more harmoniously with the rest of the nose and the face.

During surgery, Dr. Sitapara will remove a small amount of tissue at the base of the nose, improving symmetry, proportion, and projection. While nostril reduction is usually performed in tandem with rhinoplasty, it can also be a standalone procedure for patients who are otherwise happy with the appearance of their nose. If performed on its own, nostril reduction can be completed using local anesthesia with minimal risk. Dr. Sitapara is careful to preserve ethnic and cultural heritage while still addressing the cosmetic imperfections that cause concern for the patient.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the
first step?

After your candidacy has been confirmed through a private and informative consultation with Dr. Sitapara, you will need to follow a few key guidelines before surgery to ensure your treatment goes smoothly. These steps include the following:

  • Avoiding certain medications, including blood thinners, NSAIDs, aspirin, and Vitamin E, as outlined by the doctor
  • Quitting smoking at least 4-6 weeks prior to surgery
  • Scheduling a helper to drive you home and assist you for the first 24 hours

What to Expect on the Day of Nostril Reduction Surgery

When undergone on its own, nostril reduction can be performed under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort. Patients can expect the procedure to last around one hour, including check-in time, the marking of the surgical points, anesthesia injections, the surgery, and patient monitoring before discharge. During surgery, Dr. Sitapara will use one of several cutting-edge techniques to reshape and balance the nostrils to better harmonize with the rest of the facial anatomy. He may perform alar wedge excision, nasal sill excision, or V to Y advancement as needed.

Nostril Reduction Recovery

Compared to rhinoplasty or septoplasty, nostril reduction comes with a minimal and manageable recovery period. Since incisions were made, however, the patient will still experience mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness at the base of the nose that can linger for several weeks. Dr. Sitapara usually removes sutures after five to seven days. Incisions will gradually heal, with any external scarring slowly fading to imperceptible fine lines. Swelling is minimally visible after one week and is primarily noticed by the patient and the surgeon. Within 6-12 months, all residual swelling will have died down, and the patient will be able to enjoy the full results.
